Boy Scouts Attend Transatlantic Council Normandy Camporee
Posted 24/04/2019 07:26AM

Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts from local Troop 301 and Pack 301 attended the Transatlantic Council Normandy Camporee over Spring Break. The group joined approximately four thousand other participants in the event that takes place every three years—this year celebrating the 75th anniversary of the D-Day landing on June 6, 1944. TASIS is proud to be the Charter Organization (host) for both Boy Scout Troop 301 (6th-12th grades) and Cub Scout Pack 301 (1st-5th grades).

Of the many different historical D-Day sites available to see, our Scouts chose to visit the Arromanches-Les-Bains Disembarkment Museum, the battle site of Pointe du Hoc, and Sainte Mere Eglise Museum of Airborne Troops.

On Saturday night, all of the Scouts—members of more than 130 separate international units from across Europe and the Middle East—attended a traditional campfire on Omaha Beach. At the campfire, Cub Scouts crossed over into Boy Scouts and thirty-one Scouts had the honor of receiving their Eagle Scout Award on Omaha Beach. The rank of Eagle Scout is the highest honor in Boy Scouts; only about one in every hundred who join Boy Scouts earn the rank of Eagle Scout.

It is important to note that the Boy Scouts of America have rebranded to Scouts, BSA. This is part of their effort to emphasize the full inclusion of girls into their program. Since February 2019, girls can now join Scouts, BSA at all ages and work to earn the highly coveted rank of Eagle Scout.

TASIS is the host for both Boy Scout Troop 301 and Cub Scout Pack 301. Boy Scouts has fifteen Scouts from a variety of local schools and from many different nationalities. This year we also have two TASIS boarding students participating in Scouts. Cub Scouts has twenty Scouts also from a variety of schools and many different nationalities. Boy Scouts meet every Monday night at TASIS England while Cub Scouts meet once a month, with the location of each meeting changing due to the activity planned.
