TATE Modern Gallery Trip
Posted 06/11/2018 02:00PM

Art and IB Year 1 ToK students visited the Tate Modern gallery on Tuesday, 6 November as part of their TOK unit on "Art" or their IB Art class. Prior to the trip, students explored contrasting concepts of beauty by reading excerpts by Leo Tolstoy, George Santayana, and John Dewey. During their time at the gallery they engaged with ethical questions raised by some artworks and considered to what extent art carries a social responsibility. Art students were encouraged to draw a detailed sketch of a work that inspired them. Students also participated in a current project by Tania Bruguera: They entered a small gallery in the Turbine Hall which contains an organic compound that makes one cry. "Crying together in public" is seen by the artist as a forced empathy towards social barriers. When entering the room, a number is stamped on the visitor's wrist. This figure represents the number of people who migrated from one country to another last year and the registered deaths.
