Life-changing work with the poor in Cambodia
Posted 03/10/2018 09:00PM

On Wed, 26 September, Janne Ritskes from The Tabitha Foundation in Cambodia came and spoke to all of the TASIS Economics students. She recounted the trauma caused by the Vietnam War and the Pol Pot Regime and helped the students understand the legacy of this period on the people of Cambodia today.

The Tabitha Foundation does life-changing work with the poor in Cambodia. She highlighted the savings programs that allow individuals to save and develop different sources of income to move their family from poverty to middle class. She showed us the silk craft works that is a means for so many women to move from a life of prostitution to one of safety with a steady income.  She talked about the Tabitha investment in education by building schools and supporting student attendance in primary and secondary school. The biggest Tabitha project to date is the Nokor Tep Women's Hospital which is in the process of being completed and will open in March of 2019. The foundation has raised all the funds, built the building and is now buying equipment and organizing the staffing. This is a big step forward for women in Cambodia.

Janne is passionate about her involvement in Cambodia and it was a great opportunity for our economics students to see economic development projects in action.
