Posted 18/10/2016 10:27AM

On Thursday, October 14, TASIS England hosted the Runnymede Duke of Edinburgh Award's Ceremony.

Special guests of the event included the Worshipful the Mayor of Runnymede, Councillor Alan Alderson, and Mr. Francis Shine, Chairman of the Runnymede Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Forum. They joined the Duke of Edinburgh coordinators and assessors, parents, and students from schools in the local area as they gathered in the Fleming Theatre to celebrate the high-achieving participants.

Along with TASIS England, other schools and colleges with students in attendance included: Jubilee High School; The Magna Carta School; ACS Egham International School; Royal Holloway, University of London; Salesian School; and Strode’s College.

Dr. Mindy Hong, welcomed the audience, “In this, TASIS England’s 40th anniversary year, we are proud to host tonight’s ceremony as the Duke of Edinburgh Award celebrates its Diamond Anniversary. Generations of young people have benefited from 60 years of challenges and opportunities to develop their self-confidence, resilience, and talents.”

After the opening remarks and introduction, the Mayor presented students with their hard-earned Bronze, Silver, and Gold Awards. TASIS England students earned 8 Bronze and 9 Silver Awards.

The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, known by many students as the DofE, is “the world’s leading youth achievement award.” The DofE is designed to push personal boundaries and encourage young people to gain new skills. Each non-competitive award level—Bronze, Silver, and Gold—is defined by the length of time it takes to complete, how challenging the award is, and the minimum age required to begin.

All three awards require students to participate in four sections: volunteering, physical, skills, and expedition. In addition, the Gold Award requires participants to undertake a residential program, doing a shared activity while staying away from home for five days and four nights.
